Drop It members save 27 tons of CO2 emissions within the initiative's first year

Last May 22, Goumbook hosted a free movie screening and panel discussion on Plastic Pollution and its impact on marine life. The event, held in partnership with Souk Madinat Jumeirah and attended by 200 guests, celebrated Goumbook’s Drop it campaign’s first anniversary, with the official attendance of His Highness Dr Abdulaziz bin Ali bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, also known as the Green Sheikh, and an opening speech by His Excellency Dr. Thani Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment.

The Drop it campaign was launched in May 2016 and now counts 12 corporate members who took a commitment to dramatically reduce their plastic consumption in the office by switching to filtered water. The switch allows companies to reduce plastic bottles and CO2 emissions but also to make sizeable financial savings, considering that bottled water is at least 500 times more expensive than tap water. Ultimately, the initiative impacts their employees’ mindset, who are also encouraged to install water filters at home, thanks to a discount negotiated by Goumbook for its members, on a wide range of filtration solutions.

Members include Accor Hotels, Alcazar Energy, Beco Capital, Blue (Al Serkal Group), Careem, Cerus Advisors, Electrolux, Enterprise Systems, Inked, Linklaters, Omnicom Media Group and Sentinel Business Centres.

When we first launched the campaign, our main focus was the UAE residents’ health. Plastic bottles consumption is 82% higher in the UAE than the rest of the world and drinking water solely from plastic containers can disrupt hormones or expose individuals to more bacterial contamination. It is important to know that the UAE Government invests a lot to guarantee high quality tap water throughout the UAE, which is invaluable. We also aim to remind the community that local bottled water sold in the UAE is not mineral water, but filtered tap water that is sold for up to 1000 times its original price, once it is bottled in plastic.” said Tatiana Antonelli Abella, founder and MD of Goumbook. “As we celebrate our first year, we decided to bring the topic of plastic pollution in our oceans into focus, with a free movie screening of “A plastic Ocean” and with the support of key partners including all our members as well as Souk Madinat Jumeirah, the Emirates Wildlife Society (EWS-WWF), Emirates Diving Association (EDA), Surge for Water and all our filtration solutions partners.”

Plastic use increased twenty-fold over the past 50 years and is expected to double again in the next 20 years. Worldwide, only 14% of plastic packaging is collected for recycling, and about 8 million tons a year leak into the ocean, which compares to one garbage truck dropping its contents every minute.

“It is high time for our community to realise that the plastic pollution threat is immediate and imminent, and that we have to urgently re-think, reduce, recycle single-use plastic consumption. At Goumbook, our objective is to raise awareness and provide sustainable, green living solutions for people to adopt easily into their lives. So if you want to take action, get in touch with us!
